Nelson mandela
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was the leader of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He rose up against racism, poverty and equality. The majority say that he was the most inspirational South African Prime minister ever to have been elected. He was born in 1918 and continues to live a healthy life to this day.
Nelson Mandela was sent to school when he was seven, and given his English name. Both his parents were illiterate. He found South African history, and moved to a boarding school. Once he returned, he found out his parents had made an arranged marriage. Distraught, he fled to Johannesburg. He led an unsuccessful protest and was arrested in 1962 and sent to Marshal square prison. He was charged with inciting workers to strike and leaving the country without permission. He was transferred to Robben Island, and remained there for 18 years. His cell was 8 feet by 7 feet. He was given a straw mat to sleep on. He was mocked and harassed by many of the other white prisoners. In 1982, he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Tokai, Cape Town. He was there for 6 years.
Nelson Mandela dealt with extremely harsh prison conditions and racism. He lived with an arranged marriage and parents who could not write. Even in prison, he never let go. The South African public used the slogan FREE NELSON MANDELA Until his release from prison in 1988. His 60th birthday was celebrated nation wide. It was broadcasted to TV, where 600 million people watched in their homes. Nelson says that he inherited a sense of "proud rebelliousness" and "stubborn sense of fairness". From his father. This is what kept him going.
Nelson Mandela helped form the first black government of South Africa. He brought the plight of the black people from South Africa by being imprisoned for over 20 years by being against apartheid which divided black and White people in South Africa and kept them separate. The black people where 2nd class citizens in their own country to that of the white people. Mandela together with the ANC (which mandela was president of) eventually broke apartheid. He is still alive now at 90 years. He was released from prison in 1986 and went on to become president of South Africa. He got divorced from his first wife Winnie who stood by him throughout the years, she represented him in the outside when he was imprisoned and she was in later years accused of crimes and murder of other black South Africans. Mandella remarried.
Nelson Mandela doesn't say anything about whether he think his life was fortunate or not. However, by the way he has reacted, I would say that he thinks of his live being fortunate. After being in prison for 20 years, he did not act sad or depressed. He did what he believed in, and became the prime minister to stop the things he believed were wrong
Nelson Mandela has a successful life. Being the most inspirational South African Prime Minister and after 20 years of prison. He was discriminated against, and showed the entire South African population that he was important.
Anh Do and Mandela both dealt with Racism. They both started from the bottom, and both gave back to their country. They both became successful, and both had illiterate parents. They both went to school. However, just because they have these in common, doesn't mean they weren't different. Anh Do came from a different country. Mandela helped the country he was born in. Anh Do did not go to prison, or ever protest. Likewise, Nelson Mandela never became a comedian, and doesn't live in Australia.
