Mother teresa
1) Describe who this person is.
Mother Teresa was an Albanian, Indian Roman Catholic nun. She spread the word of God, served at hospitals to help the weak and sick, helped with charities and she enrolled more nuns to help her. She also built orphanages for people and mostly helped people in Calcutta in the slums.
2) Outline what problems, suffering and challenges they faced.
She never had a good relationship with her parents. It is stated in history that it was unloving and uncaring. As a school girl, she wanted to help the poor. To do this she had to receive permission from Rome to leave school to go to Calcutta. After she left she had no money with her, no place to live and no place to help the sick and weak. She never thought through things and eventually had to beg for money. Mother Teresa tried to enrol students from her old school to help her, but their parents were resisting. She had no medical education and didn’t know how to cure diseases. Mother Teresa had also stated herself that she didn’t feel God’s presence with her in her later ages, but she relied on faith to get her through it.
3) Describe how they overcame these.
Mother Teresa never overcame her bad relationship with her parents, although she did overcome other issues. The period of time where she had nothing to help the sick, she begged until she had something in her pocket and eventually students from her old school left Rome to come to Calcutta to help her, willingly. They helped her get on her feet again and try to achieve her goal. Mother Teresa talked to other priests, ministers of the country and other people to help her, mostly with the money side of it. After everything had gotten up and running, everything was getting bigger and bigger and her dream was becoming a reality. After she passed away from a heart attack over 4,000 sisters, an associated brotherhood of 300 members, and over 100,000 volunteers, were operating 610 missions in 123 countries trying to continue her unfinished business.
4) What was achieved throughout their life?
Her main achievements were salvation, peace and her place in heaven. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Her starting point was 12-13 people helping her, and now has dramatically increased by many people (stated above). In 1952, the first home for the dying was opened and ready for use. During the 70’s, she received many awards including the first Pope John XXlll Peace Prize, Nobel Peace Prize, the Pacem in Terris Award and she even received India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
5) Outline how this person viewed their life; did they see it as fortunate or unfortunate? Explain your reasons.
Mother Teresa viewed her life as unfortunate and fortunate. Her passion was helping people, but it meant giving up everything. At a period of time, she stated that she felt that God wasn’t with her. She was glad that people carried on her role and that she had made an impact.
6) Do you think they had a successful life?
I personally think that Mother Teresa did have a successful life. She helped the poor, built hospitals for the sick and most importantly spread the word of God. During her lifetime, she did all she possibly could but she still has unfinished business. Others are now contributing, but there is only so much that a person can do.
